Sepultura formed in Belo Horizonte in 1984 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera . After some initial lineup changes, the band settled with Max on guitar, Igor on drums, vocalist Wagner Lamounier , and bassist Paulo Jr. By 1985, Lamounier had already left the band to form Sarcófago , and Jairo Guedes joined as guitarist to play on the band's first EP, Bestial Devastation . The work, done in conjunction with the band Overdose , was recorded in just two days.
In 1986, Sepultura released their first album, Morbid Visions , moved to São Paulo, and changed guitarists. Andreas Kisser replaced Guedes, who had lost interest in metal. A year later, the band released an album more influenced by thrash, Schizophrenia . The album gained attention in Europe and the United States, and Roadrunner Records signed the band to release the work worldwide.
In 1989, Sepultura released Beneath The Remains , one of their most acclaimed albums. The band embarked on their first tour of North America and Europe, and played their first US show opening for King Diamond . Their subsequent albums, Arise (1990), Chaos AD (1993), and Roots (1996), were further international successes.
In 1996, Sepultura informed Max of their intention to fire their manager, Gloria Cavalera , his wife. Max then left the band and formed Soulfly . Sepultura went in search of a new vocalist and in 1998 released Against , with American Derrick Green on vocals. Four albums later, in 2007, Igor Cavalera left the band and formed Cavalera Conspiracy with his brother.
In 2009, Sepultura released A-Lex , the band's first album without any of the founding brothers and with only Paulo Jr. as an original member. Drummer Jean Dolabella also played on the 2011 Kairos Eloy Casagrande The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart in 2013 .
Sepultura has sold over 20 million albums worldwide and is considered the Brazilian band with the greatest international impact.
