Max Cavalera , co-founder of Sepultura , was invited by Loudersound to list the 10 most important songs of his career and cited the classic "Roots Bloody Roots" as one of the most remarkable.

According to the musician, the band realized that the song was "special" while still in the studio. "I really liked the idea of less is more and simplifying things," he said. "I've always loved songs that had something catchy, 'Beneath The Remains' was like that, 'Arise' too, but 'Roots Bloody Roots' was on another level."

“The chorus is definitely one of the best moments for me – finding a hook that everyone will love. And of course, I took that from Black Sabbath – 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath', 'Roots Bloody Roots',” Max joked. “I ripped them off!”

Despite the song's success, the guitarist's only regret was the change in the song's tempo. In the original demo, the track was supposed to be short and fast. "It's an iconic song, but a fast ending would have been cool and tied to our history with thrash metal," he pointed out. "I should have pushed to get the fast ending, although when I play live with Iggor [Cavalera], we always do the fast ending."

Recently, Gojira confirmed that the track “Amazonia,” from the album Fortitude , was influenced by this Sepultura classic. “I’m honored,” said Max. “I think it’s something we started and they took it and made something more. They are one of the great bands of the moment, so it’s definitely an honor, for sure.”
