Singer is competing against Disturbed and David Bowie
The Recording Academy, the institution responsible for the Grammy Awards, has commented on Beyoncé's controversial nomination in the Best Rock Performance category. In collaboration with Jack White, the pop singer is competing against Disturbed, Alabama Shakes, David Bowie, and Twenty One Pilots.
Academy Vice President Bill Freimuth commented:
“The Rock category is one of our biggest umbrellas. Not as broad as Pop, but perhaps second only to what constitutes Rock – it could be Blues, Folk, ballads… I think what we felt this year is that many Rock artists or branches of Rock took more risks this year than before, and that created an interesting landscape in the genre.”
Beyoncé's recording features Jack White and samples of Led Zeppelin, and I think it's Beyoncé expanding her horizons. And an artist of her stature and musical power really expanding in other directions is better for all of us.”
Last week, Disturbed's lead singer David Draiman commented on the nomination, saying it would be strange to compete with Beyoncé.
