Glenn Hughes on the changes of the digital age: "Those who don't accept it will be left behind."

The artist criticized the "business-only" mentality of executives in the music industry

Glenn Hughes , former bassist of Deep Purple , analyzed the changes in the music industry over the years in an interview on The Wikimetal Happy Hour .

Currently in The Dead Daisies , the musician and vocalist was asked by Nando Machado about the advantages and disadvantages of the transformations brought about by the era of record label dominance in relation to the streaming platforms used today.

“That’s a difficult question, but I’ll tell you one thing: Back then, before the internet, you didn’t connect with anyone. You were controlled by record label executives, and some of them had no idea what they were doing,” he analyzed. “Most record label executives don’t understand anything about music. It’s all just business, you know?”

In Hughes' view, this market-driven approach to music is a persistent problem in the music industry. "It's just a business, all that matters is the money invested in something that might not be fantastic, it's all corporate. Nobody is developing, no young artist is developing like they did 30 years ago. That's the problem I see," he explained.

Despite these issues, Glenn Hughes doesn't intend to just complain about what has changed. "If we don't accept the present and don't accept change, those who don't accept it will be left behind," he said. "I've embraced the internet, I have a team for all my social media. I accept it, I connect with many people online, I enjoy the exchanges. But music is my life. Nothing comes before music.".
