Glen Matlock , the original bassist for the Sex Pistols , told the story on the BBC music game show Never Mind the Buzzcocks .
Matlock, who also played with The Damned and Blondie David Bowie 's car after a performance with Iggy Pop in New York.
“He has the same car as in the movie The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) ,” said the bassist, referring to the 1974 Lincoln Continental limousine that the character uses in the film.
“We were all crammed [into the car], going down Madison Avenue, and I was sitting on David Bowie’s lap because there was nowhere else to sit,” he continued. “There were supposed to be two mirrors [inside], but instead, there was a small painting. Then I said to him, ‘Wait a second, that’s a Picasso , isn’t it?’ and he said, ‘Yes, it is.’”
When he looked to the other side, Matlock saw another painting, by Matisse , and Bowie confirmed it. “So you’re a show-off!” Matlock said, and Bowie smiled, saying “yes.” The presenters and participants of the show, including Courtney Love , burst into laughter.
The story had already been reported previously, when Glen Matlock gave an interview to The Times . Check out the video of the moment below:
