Glen Matlock Sex Pistols biopic in an interview with The Metal Voice last Friday, the 7th. Directed by Danny Boyle , Pistol Steve Jones ' memoir , Lonely Boy: Tales From a Sex Pistol .
“I just think the series should have been more truthful. The real story is braver. I met Danny again in Los Angeles after the release and attended a private screening. He asked me how I was doing and I replied, ‘Danny, you’re an asshole’,” said the bassist from the original lineup (transcription via NME ).
“I’m not disappointed with the release and I thought it was important that it went ahead because it was based on Steve’s story and addressed things. And he was the guy who formed the band – not John Lydon , it was Steve. John was the last one in the band. But my portrayal, and particularly my departure from the band – I left the band; I wasn’t fired. That whole episode where Steve fired me is just bullshit.”
Matlock also commented that his suggested ideas for the project were completely disregarded: “At first, I had a few meetings with Danny in particular and the production team. And I thought everything had been resolved. But then I was ignored. So, I'm not happy. I feel wronged.”
“I went to see it with my son Louis and I was a little embarrassed, seriously. Louis kind of cleverly said, ‘The thing is, I know you did this and that. I also know about Steve, but you and Paul Cook seem like two-dimensional characters; there’s no information about your family and all that.’”
“Some of that could have been there, and they could have developed things a bit more. And Danny might say, ‘There’s no time for all that,’ but there was a whole episode about Chrissie Hynde not marrying Steve, which took up an hour of everyone’s time, which never happened.”
Previously, Lydon also disapproved of the series, calling it the "most disrespectful piece of crap" he had ever seen .
The controversies, however, didn't stop there. In 2021, members of the Sex Pistols sued John for using the band's music in the film . The vocalist lost the legal battle , claiming it was his financial ruin .
