Ghost released the lyric video for "Mary On A Cross" last Wednesday, the 14th. The video, directed by Aaron Preusch, shows a young Papa Emeritus Nihil performing at the Whisky-A-Go-Go in Los Angeles in 1969.
The song about blasphemy, sex, and drugs, released in 2019, recently became one of the band's biggest hits when it went viral on TikTok . It didn't escape the famous trends and gained an official, slower version with reverb , as well as a live video .
Vocalist Tobias Forge told Metal Hammer that he discovered this popularity on the platform through his daughter: “She said, ‘I heard ‘Mary On A Cross’ on TikTok.’ She’d done that before with other songs. Then I was called into a meeting at the record label and they were like, ‘Are you aware of what’s going on?’ and started presenting me with the data.”
“Mary On A Cross” is Ghost’s most popular track on Spotify with one hundred million streams. Sales, on the other hand, have already reached 500,000 copies, earning it a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America .
In March, the Swedish group released their new album Impera (2022), which reached number one on the US charts . The band's most incisive and ambitious rock album has already won an American Music Award in November and has the song " Call Me Little Sunshine " nominated for a 2023 Grammy .
