Gerry Marsden , who rose to fame in the 1960s as the lead singer of his band Gerry and the Pacemakers , has died at the age of 78.

The news was confirmed on Twitter by DJ and family friend Pete Price . “It is with a very heavy heart that, after speaking with the family, I have to announce that the legendary Gerry Marsden sadly passed away after contracting a heart infection. Sending all the love in the world to Pauline and her family. 'll Never Walk Alone.”

The quote is a reference to one of the band's biggest hits, "You'll Never Walk Alone," which was adopted by Liverpool FC as an anthem in 1963 by the English football club.

The song was originally composed by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the musical Carousel, but Gerry Marsden's version became very famous and was later adopted by other European teams such as Celtic FC of Scotland and Borussia Dortmund of Germany.

In addition to this epic, Marsden scored other hits such as “How Do You Do It?”, “I Like It”, “I'm The One”, “Don't Let The Sun Catch Your Crying” and “Ferry Cross The Mersey”.
