Gene Simmons and his son Nick Simmons recently appeared on an episode of Your Mom's House , where the Kiss recalled the only time he accidentally got high.
When the bassist was talking about abstinence, he said, "I've never been drunk or high in my life." His son interrupted and asked if he could recount an episode that happened in the mid-70s in Detroit.
At the time, Gene was so oblivious to drugs that he had no idea it was possible to bake cakes and brownies with marijuana. His son still jokes that the drug his father chose was sweets.
The year was 1976 and they were celebrating some broken record. The room was packed and there was a pile of brownies on the table. Everyone was smoking and offering Simmons some, but he wasn't interested in that, only the brownies. He ate six.
Shortly after, he recounts that the room began to get bigger and his head smaller and smaller. He describes the hilarious scene: “I remember this: I started opening my eyes wide so people would think I was normal. [Makes a scared face] And as I moved, my hands got – as I got further away [from you], they got smaller – no, [my hands] swelled up like cartoon characters. Then it got huge.”
It was Jaan Uhelszk i, the co-founder of Creem , who saved him. She took Gene out to get something to eat. At the bar, everyone was staring, and he thought, “They’re all looking at me because my head is small. So I try to make myself bigger. [Makes a funny face] And I go up and the guy says, ‘What do you want?’ And I say – shouting – ‘Can I have a glass of milk?!’” After that, she took him to the hotel.
Because Gene doesn't use drugs or alcohol.
Gene's mother, Flóra "Florence" Klein , was a Holocaust survivor. He said she had already suffered enough and he didn't want her involvement with alcohol and drugs to cause her further worry.
Regarding this, the musician stated: “She was in a concentration camp when she was 14 years old. And I never wanted to break her heart. And I was always aware that I never wanted to disappoint her – she had already suffered enough. So, I never smoked cigarettes, never got high, never got drunk.”
