The song "Heal Me" by the band Gamma Ray is one of the most beautiful ballads ever written by Kai Hansen .
Part of the album Insanity and Genius (1993), the track puts you in the shoes of a person who begins to question themselves in order to understand their purpose in life.
“When I wake up at the end of the day, the moon appears and the sun sets.
I get out of bed and cry […]
No matter what, sometimes I feel like
an echo in the wind, that will never return.”
In this excerpt, the vocalist and guitarist realizes how ephemeral our lives are and that, as the years go by, we only collect memories.
"I look inside my head and see the reflections of the world
, and I see genius and insanity."
Hansen offers a brief reflection and understands the world we live in, where often both genius and insanity reside within the same person, intrinsic to the same society.
"You can be strong if you know who you are.
The signs on the wall tell you to move on before it's too late."
These signs on the wall can be a metaphor for communication, from its beginnings with hieroglyphs to the media of today.
“Help me – I need help […]
Maybe I’m wrong, I have no idea.
I don’t know where I belong – Tell me what is true.”
He says this as a plea, perhaps asking for help from some entity. Kai Hansen is a Christian, so he may be referring to the "character" praying and talking to Jesus, but what is certain is that he is lost in his own thoughts and doubts.
And not knowing where we belong is a common question for many of us, who live an entire life without knowing what our true essence is.
“Think, don’t think – what can you see?
Our life is just the fantasy of someone you’ll never see.
So I burst out laughing.
Now, as I shift my perspective,
there’s nothing left to make me sad – not again, never again.”
After a while, he realizes that, just like in the philosophical ideas of relativism, there is no absolute truth. However, by saying that he is changing his point of view and that nothing will make him sad anymore, he succumbs to his own ignorance, believing that to be happy, he can no longer feel that way.
"Oh, you didn't come to heal me – listen
to me! Heal me! Heal me! Heal me!"
But this idea doesn't last long, and he asks for something – or someone – to cure him, not of an illness, but of his own thoughts, which consume him and prevent him from understanding his purpose.
