Foo Fighters returned to the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) stage after 14 years. Their performance took place on Sunday, October 12th, with the mission of representing rock music among the event's musical acts.
The band performed a set of career hits, with "Shame Shame" representing their album Medicine at Midnight , released in February, which was nominated in the best music video categories. The tracks "Learn To Fly" and the classic "Everlong" completed the set.
On drums, Taylor Hawkins left a simple tribute to Charlie Watts , drummer of the Rolling Stones , with a handwritten message: "Charlie, rest in peace." The musician died on August 24th , at the age of 80.
The band didn't win any of the three awards they were nominated for last night, but that didn't mean they went home empty-handed. Foo Fighters were honored with the Global Icon Award , an honor bestowed upon some of the biggest icons in global music to "celebrate an artist or band whose unparalleled career and continued impact and influence have maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond."
“We’ve been a band for 26 years, so this is really great. But we’d like to thank everyone at MTV, past and present,” Dave Grohl upon receiving the award. “Thank you so much for this award. See you in 26 years.”
