Foo Fighters have recruited a new drummer. According to The Hollywood Reporter , the band, led by Dave Grohl, has hired Ilan Rubin for the position.
It is not yet confirmed whether Rubin will join the Foo Fighters as a full member or as a touring drummer. According to a source from The Hollywood Reporter , the drummer had shows scheduled with Nine Inch Nails until the end of this year, but informed vocalist Trent Reznor that he had "accepted a job in another band." However, to date, neither the Foo Fighters nor Rubin have confirmed the news.
Ilan Rubin has been the touring drummer for Nine Inch Nails since 2009, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2020, becoming the youngest inductee at the time, at age 32. He has also worked with Angels & Airwaves and Danny Elfman .
The magazine also pointed out that former Foo Fighters drummer Josh Freese will be the new drummer for Nine Inch Nails, as confirmed by a band representative. Nine Inch Nails shared a photo of Freese this Thursday, the 31st, and tagged the drummer in an Instagram story, writing "let's go!".
Foo Fighters fire Josh Freese
Foo Fighters fired Josh Freese in May of this year. The drummer, who had filled the spot left by Taylor Hawkins since 2023, revealed in a post that he received a call from the band informing him of the decision to "go a different way with the drummer." According to him, the band offered no explanation.
“Regardless, I enjoyed the last two years with them. Both on stage and behind the scenes, and I respect whatever decision they deem best for the band,” he wrote. Freese also recalled that, in his 40-year career, he had never left a group at the decision of his colleagues. “I’m not angry — just a little shocked and disappointed.”
Despite the surprise, the musician reacted with maturity and lightness. "I've always worked as a freelancer and moved from one band to another, so I'm fine," he stated. He even ended the message with good humor: " Stay tuned for my 'Top 10 possible reasons why I was kicked out of the Foo Fighters' list."
