Recently, Flea , bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers , was the subject of an internet controversy. A Brazilian fan named Rômulo met him in San Francisco and chose not to speak to the bassist, later going to Twitter to leave a message for the musician.
"Hi Flea, I met you in San Francisco, I've been a fan my whole life. I read your book and loved it. I was hesitant to ask you for a photo, I didn't want to bother you, maybe I'll ask next time. I wish you all the best, greetings from Brazil," wrote the Brazilian.
The post eventually reached Flea, who praised the fan's attitude, saying he was "kind and selfless." He replied: "Hi Romulo! I appreciate you not asking for a photo, it's a kind and selfless gesture these days. Sending you love, my brother."
Many fans, and even non-fans of Red Hot Chili Peppers, criticized the idea that it would be wrong to ask their idols for a photo. One user recalled how John Frusciante always seems "terrified" when meeting fans, while Anthony Kiedis avoids contact as much as possible.
According to her, it's "disappointing to see that Flea is going in that direction while Chad Smith seems to be the only cool one, as he's always smiling and talking to the fans."
