Capital Of Metal wants to find out which Finnish city has the most bands
Known as the birthplace of bands like Nightwish, Children Of Bodom, Sonata Arctica, and Stratovarius , and as the country where heavy metal is mainstream, Finland is now trying to discover which city in the country is the metal capital.
Conceived by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tuska Open Air, Sony Music Finland, and 10 other Finnish cities, the Capital of Metal project seeks to discover which city in the country is the capital of heavy metal music.
Participants from anywhere in the world can enter the contest, which will award two winners with a trip for two to Finland for the Tuska Open Air festival, taking place from June 29th to July 1st.
This year's Tuska Open Air lineup features performances by Kreator, Arch Enemy, Meshuggah, Gojira, Emperor, Body Count, At The Gates, Europe, and many more.
“Besides Finland having more than 50 heavy metal bands for every 100,000 people, the musical style enjoys a unique position as part of popular culture. It’s also worth mentioning the prevailing community spirit that exists among metal fans here. For example, last summer, during the Tuska festival, the police didn’t have to respond to any calls,” said Tuomo Saikkonen of Sony Music Finland.
On the campaign's official website, you can add information about bands from each city, there's an interactive map of Finland, and mini-documentaries featuring Antti Hyyrynen, vocalist and guitarist of the band Stam1na.
The campaign will be available until June 20th, and the winner will be announced the following day.
