In a powerful, yet necessary post, Fernanda Lira Crypta , spoke out about the monstrous murder committed on the eve of Black Consciousness Day.

João Alberto Silveira Freitas was murdered by security guards at a Carrefour supermarket in Porto Alegre, sparking a wave of protests and demonstrations against the structural racism that exists in Brazil.

Fernanda Lira opens her text by summarizing the feeling:

"I had planned to make a great post for today, but the racist, shitty country we live in reminds us that we still need to do the basics, which is to fight."

"For those who don't know, today, on Black Consciousness Day, we woke up to the horrifying news that YET ANOTHER black man was killed at the hands of murderers disguised as supermarket security guards (at that awful Carrefour that I'll never even walk past again)."

Fernanda then speaks about the clear existence of a deep-seated racism ingrained in the country's core:

“It exists, it’s alive, strong, and killing people every day. (…) There’s still no excuse to oppose the idea of racism today. You just need a minimum of willpower to read the thousands of texts and accounts that clearly list why quotas are not charity, why it’s not possible to have a ‘human consciousness day’ or ‘all lives matter’.”

The bassist continues: “There’s no excuse. There’s no shame in having a wrong perception about things, I’ve had many. What’s wrong is closing yourself off to changing it, not opening your eyes. Not wanting to see, not wanting to admit that racism exists and is structural, systemic and MURDEROUS, doesn’t negate the fact that it exists and kills people every day.”

Today's statements, the 20th, by Vice President Hamilton Mourão , saying that "there is no racism in Brazil," have further fueled the outrage.

Fernanda's post continues: "For me, everyone who refuses to do their part in the anti-racist struggle, which begins by admitting that it exists, is complicit in this guy's murder, because this kind of thing only still happens because there's a society that validates it, mostly in a veiled way, and that's the only reason such an absurdity still occurs."

Fernanda Lira concludes with a question and a proposal: "So, which side are you on? Give me a more just society and I promise a lighter tone, that's the deal."

Wikimetal stands in solidarity with the Freitas family, responds to Fernanda Lira's post, and registers its complete repudiation of witnessing so much systematic violence against Black people .

And just like Fernanda, Wikimetal believes that everyone has an obligation to help create a society that embraces Black people with dignity, respect, and the right to life.
