Felipe Machado , journalist and guitarist of VIPER , will present his photographic exhibition La Fiesta de Las Vivas at the Memorial da América Latina.

On November 1st, 2nd, 8th, and 9th, Saturday and Sunday, the Latin America Memorial will host a grand celebration in honor of the Day of the Dead, a traditional Mexican festival featuring an exhibition of altars, a gastronomic festival, and performances by mariachis and 'lucha libre'.

Felipe Machado's exhibition was first presented at the Memorial da América Latina in 2019, and later received the deluxe edition "La Fiesta de Los Vivos," published by Afluente. In this edition of the event, which honors women, Felipe Machado displays photos of 26 Mexican women taken during the Day of the Dead parade held on November 2, 2017, on Avenida Reforma in Mexico City.

“I’ve spent the Day of the Dead in Mexico a few times, and this celebration has always fascinated me. It’s very curious to see how Mexicans face death with joy, unlike the sadness it inspires in most people. Mexicans celebrate their dead by valuing life, and I think it was this paradox that attracted me when I tried to capture the facial expressions of the Mexican people during the celebration,” says Felipe.

“When we tell people in Brazil that Mexicans celebrate death, there’s always a reaction of surprise. That’s why I wanted to show the joy on the faces of Mexicans, a people who are very similar to Brazilians. Their Day of the Dead is a mix of Carnival and All Souls' Day, which seems like a contradiction to us. For them, however, it’s natural. In Mexico, death is part of life,” says Felipe. The exhibition will be on display at the Marta Traba Gallery, from 11 am to 9 pm.

The Day of the Dead is a celebration of Mexican culture. The festival is considered an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). The Day of the Dead at the Memorial will feature an exhibition of altars, a gastronomic festival, mariachi and wrestling performances. In total, there will be more than 120 tents and food trucks, 100 artists, and a pet-friendly environment. For the sixth consecutive year, the Day of the Dead festival is promoted by Art Shine Promoções e Eventos, in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico, the Memorial Foundation of Latin America, the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of São Paulo, and the Government of the State of São Paulo.
