Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy revealed that he and his bandmate Patrick Stump watched the famous Metallica , Some Kind of Monster (2004) , before they began working on their eighth studio album.

Last Wednesday, the 19th, Fall Out Boy officially announced their long-awaited return with the release of the single "Love From The Other Side" and the announcement of their next album, So Much (For) Stardust .

According to Wentz, while watching the Metallica documentary, he drew some parallels with his own band's current situation. The film also deals with the songwriting process for Metallica's eighth album, St. Anger (2003), and shows all the difficulties the band faced at that time, such as personal problems, addictions, mental health issues, and the departure of bassist Jason Newsted .

In conversation with host Zane Lowe , Pete Wentz commented: “Before we started working on the album, I was watching Some Kind of Monster . For some reason, I always thought they were a band 30 or 40 years ago. I don't know why, but then I thought, 'Wow, we're a band for the same amount of time they were when they recorded this, which is a weird kind of mirror to look into.'” (transcription via Loudersound )

Metallica was formed in 1981, exactly 20 years before Fall Out Boy, who in 2023 will celebrate 22 years as a band. Both bands reached the milestone of their eighth studio album within the same timeframe. During the conversation, vocalist Patrick Stump added: “That’s what you [Pete] were saying, that thing about thinking 'Do they get along?'. There are so many things that need to align for a band to make an album at this point [in their career], let alone a good one.”

Interestingly, Fall Out Boy is now facing a third similarity to Metallica's career in 2003. While the veterans were dealing with the departure of Jason Newsted, FOB's longtime guitarist, Joe Trohman , announced just hours after the release of the new single that he would be taking a break from working with the band to take care of his mental health.

Trohman assured that he will return as soon as possible, but that he needs to "recover" in the meantime. Fall Out Boy's new studio album, made with the guitarist, will be released on March 24th.
