In the new Wikimetal poll, the song "Fade To Black" "For Whom the Bell Tolls" came in second "Creeping Death" in third with 19%.

"Fade To Black" was the album's first single and was ranked 24th in Guitar World magazine's list of the best guitar solos of all time. In an interview, James Hetfield commented on the song's theme:

I was depressed at the time because all our equipment had been stolen, and we'd been kicked out of our manager's house for breaking things and drinking everything he had. It's a suicide song, and we received a lot of criticism for it, as if young people were going to kill themselves because of the song. But we received many letters talking about how people related to the song, and how it made them feel better.”

"Ride The Lightning" sold over 6 million copies in the United States alone, and is frequently cited as one of the most important albums in Thrash Metal.
