Steve “Zetro” Souza , vocalist of Exodus, spoke during an interview with Audio Ink Radio about the relationship between heavy metal fans and musicians, and what it means to be a true headbanger.
“One doesn’t exist without the other. It’s the only form of music that has to have both. Musicians, we couldn’t survive without the fans, and the fans aren’t going to get that anywhere else, because there’s no media that plays for them. Nobody cares. So, we have each other, and that’s okay,” he reflects.
The vocalist also commented on the statement many people make about having liked a band during a specific phase of their life or age. “I know that metal fans will always be there. There won't be anyone who says, 'Yeah, I listened to you guys as a kid, now I don't listen anymore.' That was never a true fan. They listened because everyone else did back then. If you like it, you still like it, because I still like it. For me, that never went away, never.”
He continued: “You never hear a guy come up and say, ‘Yeah, man, I was into Slayer last summer.’ That doesn’t happen, you’re either a headbanger or you’re not. Look at Rob Halford Judas Priest vocalist ]. Go to his Instagram or Facebook. Every day Rob posts ‘metal this’ or ‘metal that,’ or ‘this is what I’m listening to today.’ He’s a true ambassador, and he’s over 70 years old.”
Exodus' latest album, Persona Non Grata , was released last November.
