Gary Holt , guitarist for Exodus , spoke about the financial reality of metal bands, especially veteran ones, in a recent interview with Metal.de (transcribed via Blabbermouth ). In it, the guitarist mentioned the challenges of remaining active in the music scene and revealed that merchandise sales are essential for the band's survival.

The harsh financial reality for metal bands.

Holt debunked the idea of the millionaire musician. “People think we’re rich, that we live like rock stars. In reality, we sell t-shirts from my own closet to help pay the bills.” Furthermore, during the pandemic, merchandise was crucial in keeping the band afloat.

“We are street t-shirt sellers”

Furthermore, Jack Gibson , bassist for Exodus, reinforced Holt's statement, saying that most of the band's income comes from selling t-shirts on tour. "If we don't sell the t-shirts, we don't make any money. That's how the band survives."

He further emphasized that the music industry has changed significantly. Today, the traditional model no longer exists, and many bands struggle to stay afloat.

The future of music and the market crisis.

Gibson reflected on the current market: “The music business isn’t what it used to be. We don’t sell records, and if we don’t sell merchandise, we don’t have income. Furthermore, technology and artificial intelligence could eliminate musicians’ jobs.”

Despite all the financial and physical challenges, Holt and Gibson remain steadfast, driven by passion. “We love playing, even knowing that the situation is tough. We continue because music is our life.”

When asked about retirement, Holt was direct: “No, I’m not full of energy, I’m tired. But we’ll do this as long as we can.” He mentioned that he already suffers from physical problems, such as pain in his elbow, hand, and shoulder, which could limit his career in the future.

"Bonded By Blood" and the importance of passion for metal.

Finally, Holt reaffirmed that Exodus' classic debut album, Bonded By Blood (1985), remains his favorite and the foundation of the band's identity. For him, that album is the essence of Exodus and his youth. Even with the change of vocalists over the years, Paul Baloff is still the symbol of the band.
