Throughout the 2000s, Evanescence became one of the most popular rock bands, appearing on numerous music charts and building a loyal fanbase. In 2022, however, after a 10-year hiatus, the name may not ring a bell for younger generations.
In an interview with Metal Hammer , vocalist Amy Lee gave her opinion on which song would be a good choice to introduce her band to someone for the first time.
Despite Evanescence's debut album, Fallen (2003), being a fan favorite and containing hits like "Going Under" and "Bring Me To Life," Amy's choice didn't involve that album or its successor, The Open Door (2006), which featured songs like "Call Me When You're Sober" and "Lithium."
“I feel like we’ve improved since [those albums],” the singer comments. “I know it sounds strange to choose something from our new album [ The Bitter Truth ], but I think I would. I think it would probably be the first track, ‘Broken Pieces Shine.’ I feel like it encompasses something, lyrically and thematically, that’s very much us. There’s something about being different, broken, people who have been through something. Those are our people.”
“Broken Pieces Shine” is featured on Evanescence’s fourth studio album, The Bitter Truth (2021) . The song comes after the introductory track, “Artifact/The Turn”, and introduces the themes of grief and survival that are quite present on the album, made after the death of Amy Lee’s brother.
