Belo Horizonte-based death metal band Eminence , recently released the video for their new single “BYOG.” The initials are an acronym for the phrase “be your own God.” Both the lyrics and the powerful music video criticize the religious fanaticism that is increasingly evident in Brazilian society and in some other countries around the world. In particular, the band sought to criticize those who take advantage of the faith of others for their own benefit.
Vocalist Bruno Paraguay , who directed and edited the new music video with co-production by bassist Davidson Mainart , commented on the track: "'Byog' was one of the first compositions for this album, and I wanted to portray something that bothers me a lot. You can follow any religion, but be your own God." Guitarist Alan Wallace added: "It's really a protest against all forms of religion that manipulate and sell a place in heaven to the faithful. They kill, steal, and make false promises in the name of God."
“BYOG” is the second single from Eminence’s sixth studio album, Dark Echoes , which is due for release in May. The album is the band’s fourth work produced by Danish producer Tue Madsen , who has previously worked with names like Moonspell, Behemoth , and Dark Tranquility. According to Alan Wallace, the pre-production of Dark Echoes lasted nine consecutive months in 2020, with each member working separately from home due to the coronavirus pandemic.
