Following the success of Madonna – The Celebration Tour in Copacabana, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes , wants to implement Celebration May, bringing a major international act to the city every first Saturday of May. U2 is his personal suggestion to continue the event.
According to the website, the mayor announced ( via O Globo ): “We are going to make every first Saturday of May a kind of celebration day. If you want, it can be called Celebration May. I think it's good to use a foreign name, because Rio is international.” Eduardo also reinforces that, as far as he is concerned, the band U2 will be the next to perform at the event.
Beyoncé , and the Michael Jackson , which is being presented with a hologram in Las Vegas, are among the most requested names by the public.
Just like Madonna, the British band Rolling Stones also packed Copacabana beach in 2006. The musicians drew approximately 1.5 million people to Rio's most famous beach. This record was broken this year by the Queen of Pop, who gathered more than 1.6 million people for her free concert in the city.
Data collected by the Municipal Secretariat of Urban and Economic Development (SMDUE) indicates that in April there would have been a result of R$293.4 million in the economic system of Rio de Janeiro. Eduardo Paes reports that the value of R$300 million is an immediate gain, and that an event of this magnitude is immeasurable in terms of economic values collected.
