Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder paid tribute to Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan , who passed away last Tuesday, the 22nd, at the age of 57 , during his solo show in Seattle. The musician is currently on tour promoting his latest album, Earthling .
Upon entering the stage, Vedder commented: “I got here around four o'clock in the afternoon and, suddenly, my body started shaking a little, and I started feeling really bad. And I think it was because I was having an allergic reaction to the sadness. Because we lost a guy named Mark Lanegan.”.
He continued: “There are a lot of really great musicians. Some people know Seattle because of the musicians who came out of the Northwest. Some of those guys were unique singers, and Mark was certainly one of them with his very strong voice.”.
Vedder lamented not being able to meet his friend again and said: “At least we will always have his voice to hear and his words and his books to read; he wrote two incredible books in recent years.”.
The books Vedder is referring to are Devil In A Coma , released last year with the musician's account of his battle against Covid-19, and Sing Backwards And Weep , a memoir Lanegan released in 2020.
The Pearl Jam vocalist also performed a moving version of "Tender Mercies," the soundtrack to Flag Day , in tribute to his friend. Watch it below.
