Eddie Vedder talks about being in favor of abortion and women's rights.

"If it were a men's problem, it wouldn't even be an issue," commented the Pearl Jam vocalist.

In a new interview with The New York Times , Eddie Vedder discussed his long-standing activism in favor of women's rights.

When asked about the origin of his openly pro-abortion stance, Pearl Jam vocalist said the issue had become "even more important" to him over the years. Although the topic remains relevant today, Vedder had already demonstrated his progressive views in 1992 when he wrote the words " pro choice " on his arm during a performance of "Porch" on MTV Unplugged .

“Without going into too much detail, my thoughts on abortion stem from a personal experience,” she says. “The issue has only become more important to me. The real problem is not allowing women to have control over their own bodies and their future.”

The singer also pointed to an issue of institutional sexism that he believes is at the heart of the problem. “If it were a men's problem, it wouldn't even be an issue. I always thought that we, as men, perhaps shouldn't be part of the discussion. I would easily give up my place in this if all the other men did the same. It's frustrating because we're rehashing issues that theoretically had been resolved responsibly,” he reflects.

Eddie Vedder concludes by signaling a certain sense of regression upon seeing that issues like this are still being discussed. "It feels like we're trying to cure polio again," he remarks.
