Eddie Van Halen , the legendary guitarist of Van Halen , passed away from throat cancer in October 2020 at the age of 65. The musician had previously battled the disease in the tongue area in 2002, having a piece of it removed. However, a new tumor appeared in 2019 , and Ed fought against it ever since.
Alex Van Halen , Eddie's brother and drummer for VH, recently said ( via Rolling Stone ) that his brother took the bottle of steroids not intending to hurt himself, but rather to feel good from the effects of the medication. The pills helped combat post-surgical swelling; however, the guitarist thought: "If 2 pills are good, 20 are definitely better!"
"Common sense wasn't my brother's strong point," Alex added.
"Unfinished" the last song by the brothers
The full 6-minute version of “Unfinished,” the last song written by the brothers, was shared (via Unheard Van Halen ) on October 21, 2024. The release is part of the audiobook version of Alex's biography, Brothers
The drummer shared a post (via Instagram ) where he said:
"This is my tribute to my brother; my way of saying goodbye. Ed, I love you and miss you. When I see you again, I'm going to give you a few slaps!"
The brothers were working on the composition when Ed passed away, and the song was only finished now.
