Jay Weinberg tells the story
Drummer Jay Weinberg, who joined Slipknot after drummer Joey Jordison's departure in 2013, spoke in an interview on the Best Friends With Sam and Pura podcast about the audition process, revealing that when he was called he didn't know which band he was auditioning for
“I received a call to go and audition for something. They didn't tell me what it was, just 'could you come to Los Angeles and audition for this?' without any further information. I thought, 'Oh, why wouldn't I do that?' Like, the worst thing that could happen is I get a free flight to Los Angeles.”.
So I kind of went with that, I got there and it was like, 'Okay, you're going to go into this room, there's a drum set. You're going to audition for Slipknot now.' And that was it. Half the band was there. We'd become friends over the last 16 years, they'd watched me grow up.
It was like, 'let's throw this guy in the ring and see what happens, with no expectations of what might come of it.'.
The drummer then says that he surprised the band by already knowing how to play Slipknot songs: "They knew I loved the band, but they didn't know how much I had studied their music."
