Dream Theater was formed in 1985 by John Petrucci , John Myung, and Mike Portnoy , students at Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts. The band is known for the technical complexity of their music.
In 1989, Dream Theater released their first album, the only one with vocalist Charlie Dominici , who was subsequently replaced by James LaBrie , who remains in the band to this day.
The second album, Images And Words, released in 1992, achieved great commercial success and featured the three original members, LaBrie on vocals and the band's first keyboardist, Kevin Moore . Moore was replaced in '95 by Derek Sherinian , who left in '99 to be replaced by Jordan Rudess , the current keyboardist.
In 2010, Mike Portnoy left and the band began auditions for a new drummer, documented in the series The Spirit Carries On . Drummer Mike Mangini joined the band in April 2011.
The band has released 12 studio albums and sold over 12 million albums worldwide to date.
