Dream Theater's last album was released in 2016
Dream Theater is planning to begin work on new material, a successor to their 2016 album, The Astonishing.
In an interview with VintageRock.com, Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess said, “We’re going into the studio by May. So, you know, it takes time to create, then record and all that stuff. It’ll probably come out in, say, a year or so, maybe a little less, but May is when we’re going into the studio again.”
Rudess also spoke about the songwriting process for their latest album, The Astonishing : “What’s interesting about my career with Dream Theater is that, when we’re going to record an album, first of all, we always have a very strong concept of what it will be, even before we start. We imagine the music, the effect, we make a real plan and try to follow it.”
