In November, Dream Theater received their third Grammy , this time in the "Best Metal Performance" category for the song "The Alien," from their most recent album, A View From The Top Of The World .
Guitarist John Petrucci spoke about the brand on Robb Flynn's , No Fuckin' Regrets , and recalled the first time the band was nominated for the award, in 2011, for the song "On The Backs Of Angels".
“In our first Grammy nomination, the Foo Fighters were there,” Petrucci recounts. “And they won. I remember Dave Grohl saying something like, ‘Oh, you guys should have won,’ which I thought was cool. This time, I don’t know if I’ll remember all the names, but I think we’re competing with Gojira and Mastodon , and that’s a cool list. I remember being surprised in some years by the nominees – it seemed kind of strange – but this year it seems appropriate.”
Petrucci also said that being nominated for a Grammy is "fun" and "an honor," and expressed satisfaction with the recognition received. "To do what we do and how we do it and to be recognized in this universe is something I never would have expected. And it's the third time for us, so it's cool. It's a good feeling."
In addition to Gojira and Mastodon, Dream Theater is competing in the same category as Rob Zombie and Deftones. Check out the list of nominees in rock and metal here.
