Dream Theater wins first Grammy and takes a jab at those who think their songs are "too long".

"It's a good thing I didn't listen to that," said John Petrucci at the awards ceremony.

With three nominations, Dream Theater finally won a Grammy at the 2022 awards ceremony, held last Sunday, the 27th.

With over 35 years in the business, the progressive metal band was nominated for the third time and beat competitors Deftones, Gojira, Mastodon and Rob Zombie to take home the award for Best Metal Performance with the song “The Alien” , the first single from the album A View From The Top Of The World (2021).

John Petrucci took to the stage to represent the band in accepting the award. “Wow, this is absolutely insane. On behalf of the entire band, I would like to thank the Recording Academy and everyone who voted for us,” he said in his acceptance speech.

The musician also joked about criticisms regarding the band having "songs that are too long," "weird" time signatures, and "too many guitar solos." "Well, we just won a Grammy, so I'm glad I didn't listen to it," he quipped. "To progressive metal fans, stay true to who you are, because you are art."

The celebration also extended to social media. “This is insane! Our song 'The Alien' just won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. To all Dream Theater fans around the world, you guys rock, we love you, and this award is yours,” the band wrote.
