Dream Theater begins recording new album and releases video from the studio; watch it

The new work will bring together the band's "five pillars"

Progressive metal giants Dream Theater recently announced their return to the studio to work on the successor to The Astonishing (2016).

The news was announced via a video on the band's YouTube channel showing the first day of recording the drum tracks. Watch the video below.

Speaking about the band's new phase, vocalist James LaBrie revealed that the album will be heavier, while John Petrucci said that there are "heavier, more progressive, crushing, melodic and epic elements. And those are the pillars of Dream Theater."

The album will be the band's 14th and their first with InsideOut Music, a Sony Music label, a major change for the musicians who have always worked with Warner Music Group, especially Roadrunner Records, responsible for Dream Theater's last five albums. The change suggests a possible shift in the album's sound.
