The news was confirmed on the band's official Facebook page.

Dorsal Atlântica drummer Américo Mortágua passed away this past Saturday, the 19th. The musician had been battling cancer.

With the group, Américo participated in the re-recording of Antes do Fim , titled Antes do Fim Depois do Fim , and in the band's most recent album, Canudos . The musician also participated in the bands Perseverance, Akael, Panaceah, Purgatory, Mustang, Usina Le Blond, and Nemeziz .

Carlos Lopes , leader of Dorsal Atlântica and Américo's colleague in Mustang and Usina Le Blond, released a statement on the group's official Facebook page lamenting the loss: “It's been exactly one year since we recorded Canudos, the album I consider Dorsal Atlântica's best, a work that wouldn't have the same brilliance without him. Américo was the best drummer and the best human being I've ever had the honor of knowing.”
