Dolly Parton Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations in a statement released last Monday, the 14th.
“While I feel very honored and grateful to have been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I believe I haven’t earned that right,” she wrote. “I really don’t want the votes to be split because of me, so I respectfully withdraw from the voting.”
She also wrote that one day she hopes to be “worthy” of making a rock album, as her husband is “crazy about rock and roll” and has always encouraged her to do so. She ends the letter wishing good luck to all the nominees. See the full statement below.
Parton, an icon of country music, was nominated for the Hall of Fame for the first time, despite already being part of the country music equivalent. This nomination is not the first time Dolly has refused. She previously declined the Medal of Freedom , the highest American award, during Donald Trump's presidency and said she doesn't know if she would accept the medal during Joe Biden's current term.
In 1999, the singer was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and two years later she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame . She has also won several awards at the Grammy Hall of Fame.
With Dolly Parton's departure, the remaining nominees are Judas Priest, Rage Against The Machine, Devo, Kate Bush, MC5, Dionne Warwick, Lionel Richie, Eminem, Beck and more. Public voting will be open until April 29th at this link . The results will be announced in May.
