Netflix released the trailer last week for the newest documentary about the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel will arrive on the streaming service on March 20th.
Produced by director Ben Feldman, the film will detail the early years of the band's career, focusing especially on the period when the late guitarist Hillel Slovak was part of the group. Slovak died in 1988 at the age of 26.
“Ultimately, it’s a story that generates deep identification with the friendships that shape our identities and the enduring power of the bonds forged in adolescence. What generates less identification, of course, is that here these friends created one of the greatest rock bands in history,” explained Feldman [transcription via TMDQA].

As soon as it was announced, the band used their social media to criticize the documentary's promotion. According to the members, the publicity suggests that the film is about the group's official history. The musicians also believe that it should only be seen as a way to honor Slovak.
“However, this documentary is now being promoted as a documentary about the band, which is not true. We had nothing to do with it creatively. We haven’t even made a documentary yet. The central subject of this current Netflix special is Hillel Slovak. We hope it sparks people’s interest in him and his work,” the band wrote.
