Disturbed: the band never understood being called nu metal.

David Draiman said that Disturbed "never had some of the characteristics" of the genre.

David Draiman, vocalist of Disturbed, told Music Connection that he doesn't understand why the band is called nu metal.

He explained: “I don’t understand this nu metal thing, because we never rapped, we never had a DJ booth. All those elements that are part of being a nu metal band, we never had. But we came from the same era as those guys, when they were very successful, so we were put under that label.”

According to him, if they had emerged at the same time as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, "there would be no doubt how they would be identified." But, regardless of the category, he believes the important thing is to explore new territories.

“The change of direction for Disturbed on the album Evolution was very rewarding. In our opinion, it’s one of the best things we’ve ever written. It’s everything we could ever try to do.”
