In this week's Wikimetal poll, Ronnie James Dio was voted the nicest musician in Metal, with 44% of the votes. Nicko McBrain and Ian Gillan came in second and third place, with 38% and 9% of the votes respectively.
Legendary vocalist Ronnie James Dio is known for being one of the friendliest musicians in rock. Statements from fans who knew him and musicians he worked with always emphasize Dio's affability.
Speaking about Dio, Rob Halford commented: “You could talk to Dio about anything at any time. And not just the musicians, I'm talking about the fans. They were Dio's lifeblood. He loved his fans with a genuine passion. He was rarely alone because he was always with a fan signing an autograph, or something. This is just one of the components that makes Dio such a great legend.”
Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian also comments on Dio's reputation: “Ronnie was the nicest guy in Metal. Every day on tour he had some kind word, a smile. I feel honored and privileged to have shaken hands with Ronnie, and even more so to be able to say that we were friends.”
In an interview with Wikimetal, journalist Eddie Trunk said: “Personally, if you were lucky enough to know him, he was an incredible person. He was the nicest man, he cared so much about his fans, he was so genuine… People were surprised because I would go somewhere with him and introduce him to people, and when I met him again months later, or a year later, Ronnie would remember their names and greet them, he was extremely courteous and never put himself above anyone.”
