Eonian brings a much more symphonic Dimmu Borgir.

It was a long eight years of silence after Abrahadabra , until the Norwegian band Dimmu Borgir , icons of symphonic black metal, returned with their newest album of original material, Eonian , celebrating 25 years of their career.

For a band with a history that includes great albums like Stormblåst , Enthrone Darkness Triumphant , and Spiritual Black Dimensions, expectations for Eonian were enormous.

“Interdimensional Summit,” the track chosen as the first single, presented a different Dimmu Borgir: much more symphonic than usual. On first listen, the amount of keyboards and choir can be almost overwhelming. “The Unveiling,” the opening track, begins with a rhythm that vaguely resembles what Dimmu did on Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia , but soon distances itself with a more measured pace; in fact, much of Eonian is slow, dragging, and this is also true of “Ætheric,” which starts a little faster but soon slows down again. Could Dimmu Borgir be drawing inspiration from Behemoth ?

“Council of Wolves and Snakes” is undoubtedly one of the most experimental tracks Dimmu Borgir has ever composed, with tribal elements (!) and of course, choirs, and if it sounds strange at first, you soon get used to it and find yourself humming the chorus everywhere.

It is from “The Empyrean Phoenix” and “Lightbringer” onwards that Eonian truly begins to become an interesting album, sounding a bit like the Dimmu Borgir we know, despite the excessive use of keyboards that permeates the entire record.

“Alpha Aeon Omega” starts softly, speeds up, and then returns to being soft. Choirs and keyboards are ever-present, and the final track, “Rite of Passage,” is a beautiful instrumental piece, but it doesn't surprise and could be shorter.

With so many rhythmic tracks, the question remains: which songs from Eonian will Dimmu Borgir choose to play live, along with classic band tracks like “Blessing Upon The Throne Of Ty”, “Gateways”, and “Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse”? Is it a good or bad album? That will depend on how many times you're willing to listen to it.

The band is coming to Brazil for a single show in São Paulo on Friday, November 9th.
