According to Variety , he died of natural causes on August 1st. Some of the director's most notable works include films by Bob Dylan and David Bowie .

In 1965, he joined Bob Dylan for his final acoustic tour in England, making the documentary Don't Look Back . Released in 1967, the film is considered one of the great musical documentaries, as well as an example of cinéma vérité.

Working with a variety of other artists, Pennebaker filmed Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry . In 1973, he released the film Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars , starring David Bowie.

Later, he was nominated for an Oscar for his work The War Room . The documentary followed the minds behind Bill Clinton 1992 presidential campaign.
