Bones Hillman , the bassist for the Australian band Midnight Oil, died today, the 7th, at the age of 62 after battling cancer.

Hillman joined in 1987 and participated in all albums, including Blue Sky Mining , the band's biggest commercial success.

In an official statement, the bandmates wrote:

“We are mourning the loss of our brother Bones Hillman, who passed away at his home in Milwaukee today after a battle with cancer. He was the bassist with a beautiful voice, the band member with a sharp sense of humor, and our brilliant musical comrade.”

“Bones joined Midnight Oil in 1987 after playing in a few Kiwi [New Zealand] bands, the most famous being The Swingers . He played and sang on every Midnight Oil recording since Blue Sky Mining and we did thousands of shows together.”

"We will deeply miss our dear friend and colleague, and we send our condolences to Denise, who was a pillar of strength for him."

Haere rā [goodbye, in Maori, a dialect of New Zealand] Bonesy by Jim, Martin, Peter & Rob.”
