I've been observing the behavior of heavy metal fans and its subgenres quite a bit on social media, and opinions are divided. It's not surprising that lovers of the genre possess a lot of personality and critical thinking, which I consider a positive trait. Not long ago, I thought this critical thinking was a bad thing, but nowadays I can see that it's better for people to act this way than to blindly idolize the genre. Believe me, rationality is the best path.

Because of all these differing opinions on social media about certain bands , in this article I've divided headbangers into two behavioral categories: the nostalgic and the researchers. The first category includes those who enjoy the feeling of nostalgia, listen to classic bands, and are more likely to collect vinyl records.

On the other hand, there are the researchers, who are drawn to the new, to something different, and to new sounds. They typically use streaming services more to achieve faster research speeds, in order to satisfy their anxieties.

We can see that, although some headbangers seem stuck in the past, metal continues to evolve. I want to make it clear that this isn't a direct criticism of anyone, as we can all be both types of people, depending on our mood and state of mind.

I myself was that nostalgic person for many years, and I can say that the feeling of nostalgia is a dangerous thing. When we're in that state, we can't think outside the box and we get stuck in time. During the pandemic, I discovered many new bands online and was surprised by some "new genres" of metal that I didn't know before, such as post-metal, blackgaze, atmospheric black metal, among other styles, which, incidentally, helped me a lot in the sound identity of my musical project pdat84 .

Sometimes my mood dictates that I play that Iron Maiden , and I don't stop listening. But I also don't try to feed my nostalgia too much in order to move forward, because metal is evolving and we need to keep up with this constant change. By the way, what new band did you discover this week?
