Derrick Green , vocalist of Sepultura , believes that veganism is experiencing a surge in popularity within the metal community.

A proponent of a healthier lifestyle for musicians , without backstage excesses that could harm their health, Green became a vegetarian at the age of 15. Recently, he adopted a vegan lifestyle, in which he seeks to exclude animal products from his diet and entertainment, for example.

“It’s definitely increasing [in the metal community], it’s incredible how much,” the singer noted in an interview with Under Fire (via Blabbermouth ). “I’ve noticed that festival shows are serving more plant-based options at buffets, and with options that are tastier and healthier.”

The musician cited an increase in demand for vegan food, even from bands. As a consequence, the menu at musical events has evolved to offer more than just the cliché salad options, focusing on more elaborate dishes. As a result, the vegan section of the buffet is now popular and often forms queues.

“Even the guys in my band who aren’t vegan, they like to be healthy and eat well on the road, they’re much more conscious about digestion, [not] being on stage with a full stomach and things like that,” he continued. “So a strict vegetarian diet is easier to digest, you feel lighter, and companies are providing tastier food (…). Because people are understanding that you can live longer and be happier with this lifestyle.”

In Green's view, this change is part of a new vision among rock and metal musicians to achieve greater longevity, leaving behind the habit of "getting wrecked" backstage or on stage due to alcohol and drug use. "Much of it also has to do with food," he concluded.
