Sepultura vocalist Derrick Green shared details about his artistic development and also spoke about the family support he received throughout his career in a new interview with Finnish channel Chaoszine ( via Blabbermouth ). Furthermore, the musician reflected on albums that marked his vocal evolution and revealed how producers, especially Jens Bogren , were crucial in exploring new sonic possibilities.

The impact of Jens Bogren on Sepultura's recordings.

According to Green, each album is a learning opportunity. However, he highlights the recordings of Machine Messiah (2017) and Quadra (2020) as key moments, mainly due to the work with Swedish producer Jens Bogren.

Jens practically became a member of Sepultura. He encouraged me to create different harmonies and vocal lines, and even to record a track in Japanese, including a choir in a church, the vocalist said.

Therefore, these challenges symbolize the true role of the artist: to put themselves to the test and explore the unexpected. For this reason, this constant pursuit is fundamental to growth.

Unconditional support from parents from the beginning.

When asked about the beginning of his musical journey, Derrick said that his parents were always understanding, even with the aggressive style of music he produced.

My parents allowed my first band to rehearse in the basement of our house, even without understanding what we were doing. But for my mother, who is a music teacher, artistic expression has always been important, said Derrick.

Thus, for him, this support was fundamental in shaping his musical identity and opening doors in hardcore with the band Outface , before joining Sepultura.

Farewell to Sepultura and new directions.

Currently, Sepultura is on their farewell tour, Celebrating Life Through Death , commemorating the band's 40th anniversary with a setlist spanning their entire career. During this journey, the band is recording 40 songs in 40 different cities to create a special live album.

Furthermore, this phase marks the debut of drummer Greyson Nekrutman , who replaced Eloy Casagrande , now a member of Slipknot . Eloy's departure, announced on the eve of the tour, caught the band members by surprise.

Despite the changes and the end of activities, Derrick Green remains focused on Sepultura's legacy and, above all, on the importance of continuing to evolve as an artist — something he has been doing since his first rehearsal in his parents' basement to stages all over the world.
