Delain vocalist Charlotte Wessels was asked by RAMzine about whether there is sexism in the music industry. Wessels said:

“I think it exists everywhere. I don’t think it exists more in music than in other areas. Metal itself is a particularly interesting genre because it has always been very associated with masculine traits. But if you look at it more openly, if you consider that a few years ago women couldn’t even enter music schools, I think we’re making good progress. And of course, there are other issues. For example, the fact that we have a new guitarist in the band now. Everyone keeps asking me, “What’s it like having another woman in the band?” And I think, “Please just ask me what it’s like having a new female guitarist. It does her much more justice.” So of course it’s everywhere.”.

A while back, an interviewer asked me, “So Charlotte, there are some bands with female vocals in the industry. So what do you do to sound different?” And I said, “Well, first of all, would you ask that question to a man?” And that kind of invalidates the whole question. He didn’t mean any harm, and I felt worse because he felt bad afterward.”
