Def Leppard has been writing new songs, but Joe Elliott says: "Albums aren't as important anymore."

The lead singer also revealed that the band has been writing new songs since the release of their last album six years ago

Joe Elliot is aware that Def Leppard was released almost six years ago. In an interview with host Kyle Olsson , the singer admitted that the band has some songs still written (transcription via Blabbermouth ).

“I can’t deny that we wrote some songs as a mere exercise to see if we could still do it, and I can announce that it was very successful,” Elliot stated. The singer, however, gave no indication that the band is planning a new album, at least for now. “What are we going to do with these songs? We still need to see,” he said.

The Def Leppard vocalist also stated that touring nowadays is much more important than making new albums, especially for bands with a legacy. “The industry being what it is, we’re well aware that there’s an element of the media that can’t let go of the fact that albums aren’t that important anymore. And I know it’s a sad thing to say, but it’s a fact of life,” he reflected. “I went to see the Rolling Stones [live] in 1989 in case one of them died. That was in 1989. They hadn’t had a death since the 1960s.”

Elliot revealed, however, that Def Leppard continues to make music and does not intend to interrupt the process. “[Writing songs] has nothing to do with the coronavirus,” he stated. “We’ve been doing it since the last album came out and we’re going to keep doing it, whether we release an album or not. We have songs in mind.”
