Speaking about the album, McBride said in a press release: “The new album will reflect what the five of us created in the rehearsal room. Many of the songs, like 'Portable Door', were written in the early sessions and literally came together in 5 or 10 minutes. Everything was so easy and natural.”

Vocalist Ian Gillan added: “Throughout Deep Purple’s history, our best songs have always been those that were written in a short amount of time. We played what sounded good and developed songs as we always have.”

Speaking about the album, the group explained the album's name: “The enigmatic title =1 symbolizes the idea that in an increasingly complex world, everything ends up simplifying until it becomes a single, unified essence. Everything equals one.”

Deep Purple in Brazil

The band will perform a solo show in São Paulo on September 13th, two days before their Rock in Rio performance. The show will be at Espaço Unimed as part of the = 1 More Time , promoting the album = 1 and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Machine Head (1972).
