Dee Snider of Twisted Sister said during a Twitter discussion that he believes Robert Plant and Ronnie James Dio "aren't great frontmen."
The musician started the debate on New Year's Eve after responding to a fan's tweet praising Dio and placing him as the second greatest rock vocalist after Freddie Mercury . Check out the tweets at the end of this article.
“You’re confusing singing with acting. There’s a big difference between a great frontman and a great singer,” Snider wrote in response to the fan. “Ronnie was one of the greatest singers of all time, but as a vocalist, he pretty much just got on stage and sang. Freddie was an incredible singer and frontman.”
Snider went on to cite Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin , claiming that "he didn't show anything as an artist," despite confessing to being a fan of his voice. "He looked amazing, beautiful hair... he went on stage with one hand raised and sang like crazy. He's not a frontman in my opinion," he said, later specifying that his favorite frontmen were "showmen" who interacted with the crowd.
After Snider's speech, a fan accused him of disrespecting Plant, but Snider responded that the Led Zeppelin vocalist is one of his musical heroes and greatest influences, claiming that he had a poster of the Led Zeppelin vocalist on his wall.
Snider then cited some of his favorite frontmen: David Lee Roth, Paul Stanley, Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury , and Axl Rose . When asked about the greatest frontman of all time in his opinion, Snider praised James Brown.
