Last week, Jon Schaffer pleaded guilty to two charges following the break-in at the U.S. Capitol. The news resonated among musicians, with disapproval coming from names like Dee Snider and George Fisher of Cannibal Corpse .
The Twisted Sister was scathing in his criticism of Schaffer . “This piece of shit shames the metal community,” he wrote on social media. “First he shames us with terrorist actions in DC [Washington] and THEN he becomes a rat to his own people for a lighter sentence! Be a man! Own up to your mistakes! If you committed the crime, accept the sentence.”
Following Schaffer's arrest, George Fisher was compared to the Capitol intruder in a series of memes that portrayed the Cannibal Corpse vocalist as a better role model.
“In the beginning, when all this started, I thought, ‘Wow, man, what were you thinking?’ I understand if you think some things aren’t right in the country, but I would never go to that extreme,” Corpsegrinder commented to Metal Hammer . “I think my wife saw the meme first and showed it to me. I thought, well, that’s cool, I’m glad some people think so well of me.”
Despite disapproving of Schaffer's behavior, Corpsegrinder was more lenient in his comments on the case. "It's fair to think I wouldn't do anything like that. But look, I'm not trying to judge him," he explained.
On January 6th, a fascist demonstration against the results of the United States presidential election led to the invasion of the Capitol, an act that left five dead. The Iced Earth guitarist has been in jail since the 17th of the same month, when he turned himself in to the police, and is expected to sign a cooperation agreement with the authorities to reduce his sentence.
