David Lee Roth , best known for his work as the lead singer of Van Halen , has announced his retirement after a series of five shows scheduled for January in Las Vegas. The performances begin on New Year's Eve and continue for four more dates.
“I’m hanging up my boots,” Roth told the Las Vegas Review-Journal . “I’m retiring. This is the first and only official announcement… You received the news, now share it with the world. I’m not going to explain the statement. The explanation is in a safe. These are my last five shows.”
Roth's cryptic words were followed by an even darker comment from the singer, who reflected on the death of his bandmate Eddie Van Halen , who passed away a year ago from cancer. “I thought I’d go first, to be honest. I thought the cigarette would get me,” Roth said. “I’m encouraged and compelled to come to terms with how short time is, and my time is probably even shorter.”
