David Johansen , lead singer of the New York Dolls , revealed his battle against stage 4 cancer and a brain tumor, which he has been fighting since 2020.

The vocalist also had great success in the 80s, where he performed under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter and had a successful career outside of his band.

In a statement, the musician also revealed that he had a fall at home in November 2024, fracturing two places in his back. The same statement says that Johansen is "bedridden and incapacitated" and requires 24-hour care. (via TMDQA )

“We’ve been living with my illness for a long time, still having fun, seeing friends and family, moving forward, but this fall the day after Thanksgiving really took us to a whole new level of debilitation. This is the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my entire life. I’ve never been one to ask for help, but this is an emergency. Thank you.” (via Consequence )

The musician also asked for help to pay for cancer treatment

In partnership with the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund , the vocalist created a charitable fund bearing his name. The funds raised are intended to ensure he has "full-time nursing care, physical therapy, and funding for vital day-to-day expenses" while David Johansen battles cancer.

In addition to donations, fans can also purchase a special t-shirt, with the proceeds going to him, who is 75 years old.

Director Aric Steinberg said the institution is "honored" to help, as it is a "difficult time" for David and his family.

Steinberg also stated that the vocalist has an "indelible musical influence" with the New York Dolls and that his career as a musician and actor "has touched many people around the world."
